Fraunhofer IOF Jahresbericht / Annual Report 2025

11 Our Institute Light is a versatile tool. Due to its many applications, as well as its unique properties as an electromagnetic wave and a light particle, it is the basis of numerous key technologies for future challenges of the modern world. In this context, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, situated in the long-standing tradition of the optics hotspot Jena, is conducting research into the ongoing development of photonic technologies to solve a wide variety of problems and application scenarios. The work of the research institute, founded in 1992, focuses on applied research into the generation, guidance and measurement of light. The interdisciplinary pooling of the institute’s own expertise in the fields of optics and precision engineering allows Fraunhofer IOF, together with cooperating institutions, to develop complex and unique photonic components and systems. With partners from basic research and industry, innovative solutions are created that represent a technological advantage in science and business. New fields of application are opened up for photonics and relevant value is added for society
